Africa-Press – Cape verde. The training ship of the Italian Military Navy, Amerigo Vespucci, known as “the most beautiful ship in the world” is anchored in Porto da Praia. He arrived this Friday, the 4th, at a logistics stop, on what is his second trip around the world. It is open to the public this Saturday.

Amerigo Vespucci is the oldest ship of the Italian Military Navy, launched in 1931.

He arrived at Porto da Praia this Friday morning, 4th, to reload food and water, and will leave on Sunday, heading to Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, on his second trip around the world.

According to the Captain of the ship, Commander Luigi Romagnoli, Amerigo Vespucci left the port of Genoa on the 1st of July, for a trip that will last 20 months.

On board there are 420 crew members, including 130 Cadets from the Italian Naval Academy, who carry out a kind of internship on the ship, to learn how to navigate a sailboat, notions of astronomical direction, among other valences.

Second time in Cape Verde

This is the school ship’s second round-the-world trip, and also its second visit to Cape Verde.

The first trip took place in 2002/2003, when it called at the port of Mindelo, in São Vicente.

In addition to logistical reasons, Luigi Romagnoli told A Nação that this stopover is also opportune to renew the ship’s visit to Cape Verde, whose waters, he underlined, are “very beautiful, warm and calm”, despite “a little waves”.

Going to Santo Domingo

On Sunday, Amerigo Vespucci continues his journey towards Santo Domingo, a route that should last 22 days, crossing, before that, the waters of the remaining islands of our archipelago.

This Friday, the 4th, the crew hosted a courtesy reception, which was attended by the Italian ambassador in Dakar and Cape Verde, government representatives and civil society figures.

Amerigo Vespucci is the oldest ship in the Italian navy, launched in 1931.

Each summer, for three months, he embarks with cadets from the Naval Academy to gain experience as a crew on a military sailing ship.
