Africa-Press – Cape verde. The town of São Martinho Pequeno won the municipal competition “Praia Bonita” from the Praia council, worth five thousand contos, and the neighborhood of Vila Nova won in the “Healthy Beach” category, worth two thousand contos.
The announcement was made this Monday by the director of Municipal Health Promotion at Praia City Council, Evelise Barbosa, during the public presentation of the results of the “Praia Bonita e Saudável” competition, released this afternoon, at Praia City Council.
As he recalled, the aforementioned competition had two categories, the first being the cleanest neighborhood category and the other the healthiest neighborhood, highlighting the citizen’s contribution to the implementation of policies in the area of municipal health.
According to the director, the objective of the Praia Bonita competition aims to raise awareness in the neighborhoods represented by community associations, residents’ associations, worth five thousand contos, the neighborhood with a public work that the neighborhood itself will choose.
The representative of the São Martinho Association, Conrado Barros, was satisfied with the award, informing that with the amount made available they will build a municipal pigsty in that location as a way of contributing to the promotion of public health and the creation of a greenhouse team for the production of gases.
For his part, the representative of the Vila Nova neighborhood association, Artur Veiga, highlighted the importance of the “Praia Saudável” award, which will create a solid waste treatment project, food treatment and the creation of the public health operational unit with a focus on promoting public health.
The locality of the Achada São Filipe neighborhood was awarded a certificate of honorable mention for participating in the aforementioned competition, however, the city council of Praia assured that it was open to, through a protocol, support the implementation of the project presented by the aforementioned neighborhood.
For his part, the Mayor of Praia, Francisco Carvalho, highlighted that the municipality faces several challenges in the area of sanitation and that with the aforementioned project, communities are called to make their contribution to local development.
“We held this competition because public health is an important issue, it is a work designed to respond to the demands of the municipality and to involve residents in the local development process”, he added.
However, he reiterated that changing mentality is the main challenge to be overcome, highlighting that people do not want to participate as a collective in the development process of the municipality of Praia.
“This competition is a great instrument to raise awareness and change mentality, we want to attack the problem at the root. This is another effort to also combat the problem of garbage in Praia and we want everyone to help us in this fight”, he highlighted, reinforcing that this competition symbolizes the sign of openness on the part of the Praia layer.
