School canteens maintained by Ficase operate normally in 16 municipalities in the country, assured the chairman of the board of directors of the Cape Verdean Foundation for Social and School Action (Ficase), Albertino Fernandes. In some municipalities there was no enrollment of students.
Speaking to Inforpress, Albertino Fernandes said that the objective of the Cantinas Escolares program during the holidays is to ensure some food security for students “with more vulnerabilities” and considered that it was “fulfilled” for this purpose.
“There was no adhesion of students who didn’t really need it, students who had this need and who felt this need, schools were open and prepared to support”, stressed the same source.

In some councils, underlined Albertino Fernandes, there were schools that analyzed and concluded that there was no need to implement this program, so they did not adhere, but, he asserted, “in 16 councils it worked normally”.
“We had meals at schools, we also distributed food baskets to the families of some students, basically it was to guarantee some food security for students who can only eat one meal a day and do it in schools”, he maintained.
For the academic year 2022/2023, that official made it known that the three largest programs are school meals, school kits and school transport.
