Uni-Cv Launches Fifth Edition of Mathematics Camps

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV) and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation announced today the fifth edition of the “Mathematics Camps”, aimed at motivating secondary school students, scheduled for the end of this month.

An initiative, according to information available on the Uni-CV website, which aims to combat academic failure in the subject, will bring together secondary school students in Praia and Mindelo for a week-long immersion in activities and the fun side of mathematics.

The 2025 edition begins in Praia, from July 21st to 25th, with 10th grade students from the Sotavento Islands.

The following week, from July 28th to August 1st, Mindelo will welcome 11th grade students from Barlavento.

According to the same source, the project was designed to “change the negative perception that many young people have of the subject”, that is, instead of traditional classes, the “Campos” use games, technology, group challenges and everyday problems.

“All of this is aimed at reducing anxiety and sparking students’ curiosity, demonstrating the usefulness of mathematics in areas such as science, the arts, and even sports,” reads the Uni-CV website.

The focus will also be on training high school teachers who supervise the students, with a specialized ten-hour module to introduce more innovative teaching tools into the classroom.

Since its first edition in 2021, the “Campos da Matemática” project has already “impacted hundreds of students and dozens of teachers” across the archipelago, consolidating itself as a strategic partnership between the Gulbenkian Foundation, Uni-CV and the Ministry of Education.
