Africa-Press – Cape verde. The University of Mindelo has registered a growing number of candidates for the academic year 2022/2023, in a universe of eleven degrees, three masters and one doctorate available.

According to information provided by the coordinator of Academic and Administrative Services, Risanda Soares, these are the courses already accredited by the regulatory authority, and the university continues to await the accreditation of an integrated master’s degree, a degree and two doctorates.

Among the degrees available are Business Management, Nursing, Optics and Vision Science, Hotel and Tourism Management, Political Science and International Relations, Criminology and Social Reintegration, Law, Languages and Business Relations, Psychology, Renewable Energy Engineering and Informatics and Computer Systems, all already accredited.

As for the Master’s, the courses in Educational Management, Maritime Law and International Trade and Computer Engineering are accredited, while for the PhD, the Social Sciences course is available.

Increase in candidates vs quality

Risanda Soares says that the institution has registered an increasing number of candidates in the first phase of applications, when compared to the previous academic year and in the same period of the year.

“We have more candidates in almost all of our training offerings. However, it is still premature to come up with exact numbers”, she says.

Maintaining the quality of training offers and continuing to offer training programs with “high quality” so that Uni-Mindelo continues to be a reference institution in the country is pointed out as one of the challenges to be faced.

“We are concerned about the socioeconomic situation of families in the country, given that last year the number of scholarships and support for higher education at the national level was insufficient for the total number of candidates and this causes many dropouts among those enrolled.

Sensitivity to social issues

In terms of sustainability, Risanda Soares says that the socio-economic situation of families has a direct impact on the management of the university, since student fees represent the only income to carry out its activities.

Even so, despite the situation worsened by the pandemic, he guarantees that this is an institution that is sensitive to social issues, with a well-defined social action policy.

“We provide various types of support, namely tuition fees discounts, through agreements with unions, municipal councils, private entities, religious and private entities, moratoriums, through which students can attend classes and take exams, present and defend reports and competition conclusion works with the financial situation to be regularized, and also lower fees and fees compared to other Higher Education Institutions”.

Uni-Mindelo says it is “aware” of the “extremely difficult situation for all Cape Verdeans”, but guarantees a good management of its resources, in order to maintain the quality of its training offers.

“Despite the difficulties, we are the fastest growing institution in terms of infrastructure and technological innovation, as we continue to make large investments and still count on the support of our international partners”, he concludes.
