Vitó Project exposes “Island of Fogo, World Biosphere Reserve”

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Ilha do Fogo, World Biosphere Reserve” is the title of an exhibition that the Projecto Vitó Association will promote, from April 26 to May 3, in partnership with the Municipality of São Filipe. The idea is to show the reasons and values that led Fogo Island to be classified as a World Biosphere Reserve.

According to the executive director of the Vitó Project, Herculano Dinis, the exhibition aims to demonstrate a little of the biodiversity of the island of Fogo and the areas where the project operates, namely on “the species that exist in the Fogo/Brava region and in the Rombos Islets”.

The exhibition, which takes place at the facilities of the Centro Sete Sóis Sete Luas, also known as Espaço 24, will have three different groups, one of which will only be about seabirds.

“We are going to exhibit photographs of the nocturnal species”, said the project manager, to Inforpress, indicating that, in mid-February/March of this year, the Belgian photographer, Bart Vercruysse, carried out a “fabulous job”, photographing colonies of seabirds, in Ilhéus Rombos.

The exhibition will have a room with only the photographs of the birds of this photographer, known worldwide, and is framed in a project of his that is called “Petrels by night”, functioning as a demonstration point of these photographs on the island of Fogo, as he exhibits in several countries in Europe and the world and is collaborating with the Vitó Project.

In addition to the photos of this photographer, photographs of other species of birds that exist in Cape Verde will be exhibited.

According to him, there is also a space with photographs of the Vitó Project team, which will have a video session of the areas where the project operates and the work carried out on biodiversity in general.

“There will be a session on the endemic plants of the island of Fogo”, pointed out Herculano Dinis, indicating that, in general, the exhibition is to “demonstrate the biosphere reserve of the island of Fogo”.

“We are trying to set up an exhibition, so that people recognize the reasons and values that led the island of Fogo to be classified as a World Biosphere Reserve”, hence the title of the exhibition “Ilha do Fogo, World Biosphere Reserve” ”, but extended a little more, because the project does not work and works only on the island of Fogo and the main focus is the region of Fogo, Brava and Ilhéus do Rombo.

The Vitó Project team will be in the exhibition space from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, with the expectation of receiving all the delegations that visit the island during this festive period.
