“Volcanological technicians are monitoring the seismic activity, which has decreased, although some activity has yet to be registered”, he said on the sidelines of a debate in the Cape Verdean parliament, in the capital, Praia,

Monday’s earthquakes, with a magnitude between 4.0 and 4.5 on the Richter scale, were felt by the population and caused minor injuries, the minister added, with reports on social media of cracks in some buildings.

Around 5,500 people live on the island and some, heard by Lusa, say that some residents preferred to sleep outside, for fear of new earthquakes that could destroy their homes.

Paulo Rocha said that there is a team from the National Civil Protection Service on its way to the island, to join the work of local authorities.

“The situation is calm”, he said, recommending that the population remains alert, but recognizing that this is a context that residents are already familiar with.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INMG) of Cape Verde, the epicenters of Monday’s earthquakes were located between two and three kilometers off the coast of the island, between the areas of Vinagre and Aguada.

About 30 kilometers east of Brava Island is the Fogo Island volcano, which last erupted in 2014.

Lusa sought additional information from INMG, but it sent more information to a later press conference.
