Africa-Press – Cape verde. Vulcão, a horse approximately seven years old and owned by owner Clóvis Teixeira, died today, one of the members of the Nené de Papinha stable confirmed to Inforpress.

The death of Vulcão, which shocked the island’s equestrian community and admirers, was confirmed by Omar Teixeira, one of the stable’s managers.

According to him, a sort of “abscess” appeared on the horse’s neck in recent days, causing a fever, which may have been the cause of death.

Vulcão arrived on Fogo Island in mid-2021 and quickly distinguished himself in equestrian competitions, winning three titles (first place) in the space of about five years.

Among his most notable victories are first place in the 2023 São Filipe Festival, the 2023 Mosteiros Municipality Festival, the 2025 Praia Municipality Festival, third place in the 2025 São Filipe Festival, fourth place in Mosteiros 2024, and fifth place in Gamboa 2023, among other awards.

He qualified for the final race on July 5th this year, but his owner eventually withdrew him from the race.

The horse Vulcão died almost a year after the mare Passadinha, who was one of Vulcão’s main rivals, died on October 22, 2024.

In the space of a year, Fogo Island lost two of its finest horses, who made their mark on the equestrian scene on Fogo Island and in Cape Verde. They will be remembered by equestrian enthusiasts as true legends in competition, along with other horses that have shone in the São Filipe events since 1975.

Three years ago, after the first phase of the horse race during the 2022 São Filipe festivities (April 27), four horses (Foguete, Vulcão, Brazão, and América Dreams) that participated in the equestrian event died. Although the National Anti-Doping Organization of Cape Verde (ONAD-CV) collected samples for testing, the results are still unknown.

Since then, the number of horses that have died in the space of three years has risen to six, including Passadinha in 2024 and now Vulcão.
