With the National Assembly palace full ( see photos ), the president of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), Rui Semedo, considered that Cape Verde is experiencing a major governance crisis that can only be resolved with a new Government led by your party.

According to Inforpress, these statements were made during his opening speech for the PAICV’s new political and parliamentary year, which began with a minute of silence in honor of Georgina Benrós de Mello, who passed away this Saturday, in Portugal, victim of illness prolonged.

This, the speaker recalled, was the first secretary of the urban sector of Praia of the PAIGC/CV, its member of the National Council and also a representative of the PAICV in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).

Democracy at stake and governance crises
According to this newspaper’s source, Rui Semedo began his speech by praising the role that the mayors have played in a “ difficult ” context for the world, for the country, and at a time of “ great ” intolerance from the opposition, that is, from Movement for Democracy (MpD) in relation to the municipalities led by PAICV.

“We are also experiencing a crisis of democracy. We have a Government that creates all the difficulties, all the obstacles for our mayors who fulfill the mission of serving their citizens and Cape Verdeans ”, he stated, adding that they relate to them as if the country’s resources belonged to people. who are there to govern.

“ So I think this is a great attack on democracy ”, continued Rui Semedo, who stated that this was more than enough reason for the party to join forces, mobilizing all Cape Verdeans to “ give back ” to the Cape Verdean people a dignified Government, which respects differences, which dialogues, which respects the chambers, and a Government which respects the people.

Addressing a message to activists, friends and supporters, but particularly to youth, he said, according to Inforpress, that Cabral and the PAICV throughout their career showed Cape Verdean youth the way of the land, but that at this moment it happens that the MpD Government, once again, is once again showing young Cape Verdeans the way to the land far away.

For a new PAICV government that is up to the country’s challenges
“It is clear that we are experiencing several crises, crises of poverty, difficulties, an increase in the cost of living, an increase in the price of products, a drastic drop in purchasing power. We are experiencing a major governance crisis because we have an insensitive Government, a Government that does not dialogue, an intolerant Government, a Government that does not respect differences ”, he argued.

As several leaders commented before and after the opening of the new political year, « PAICV will now be focused on returning to power in 2025, aiming to give new hope to Cape Verdeans with the political, economic, social and cultural relaunch of the country ».

In this sense, Rui Semedo argued, according to Inforpress, that the aforementioned crisis can only be resolved with a new Government, recognizing that the PAICV then has to work to give Cape Verde a new Government, up to the country’s new development challenges.

“ In fact, there is no point in our existence as a party if it is not an instrument of economic and social transformation for the benefit of the Cape Verdean people ,” he said.

The challenge of winning the next local elections
In conclusion, the PAICV leader stated, according to Inforpress, that this year will be a great challenge as it is a year that leads to local elections, elections in which, he assured, his party has “great” candidates and has “everything ” to win them.

“ We have made a difference in local government management at the country level through competence, vision, the ability to foresee and carry out, through dialogue with Cape Verdeans, through the humility and dedication of our comrades”, he highlighted, according to the source mentioned, considering that there is a lack of just remobilization and a feeling of dedication to conquer new chambers and thus “ open new horizons and paths for Cape Verde ”.
