Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah has won an Emmy Award for the best variety talk show. This is the first time that the show has received this prestigious award since prior host Jon Stewart’s final year on the show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Noah left The Daily Show in 2022, with his final episode airing on 8 December of that year. The 2023 Emmy Awards were delayed till this year due to the Hollywood strikes, which is why Noah’s final season with the show is only now being honoured.

The Daily Show beat the likes of The Late Show With Steven Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Problem With Jon Stewart and Late Night With Seth Meyers.

During his acceptance speech, Noah said:

In his speech, Noah also joked about ‘beating’ John Oliver, who was not in the same category as The Daily Show. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver won the first scripted variety series Emmy award. This is the eighth Emmy in a row for Oliver’s show, having dominated the outstanding variety talk series category in previous years.

Noah said in his speech:

“I told you! I told you we would beat John Oliver if he wasn’t in our category. We did it! We got rid of John Oliver!”

Noah also thanked the members of The Daily Show’s team:

“I want to start by thanking the crazy Africans who followed me to this country, David Kibuuka and Joseph Opio, David Meyer, my partner in crime, the writers and the team, Roy Wood Jr. from the very beginning, Jordan Klepper, whose flight got cancelled.”

“Showrunner Jen Flanz, this woman rode with me through the trenches. Thank you so much to the team and everyone who gave us an opportunity,” Noah continued.

A permanent replacement for Noah has yet to be found as the host of The Daily Show.

In the Emmy press room, Noah later said:

“When they announced that we had won, I was like, ‘Ah, who is going to replace me?’ That’s the second thing I thought of as well. I’m still thinking about that, and I will continue to think about it as I celebrate this amazing achievement.”

Noah was also nominated for a Golden Globe in the category of best performance in stand-up comedy on television, which was won by Ricky Gervais. Noah is also nominated for a Grammy in the category of best comedy album.
