World of Salt Literature Festival with more than 30 national and foreign writers

Africa-Press – Cape verde. About fourteen Cape Verdean and seventeen foreign writers and professors are scheduled for the Mundo Sal Literature Festival, which will take place from the 8th to the 11th of June on the country’s most touristic island. Altogether, around seven countries will be represented, including translators, essential to the process of internationalization of works.

The fifth edition of the Mundo do Sal Literature Festival takes place this year in honor of Cape Verdean linguist Dulce Almada Duarte and Italian writer Antonio Tabucchi.

There are even planned praise sessions held by Adelaide Monteiro, Amália Lopes and Filinto Elísio for Dulce Almada Duarte, and Clara Silva, Luca Fazzini, Marco Piazza and Roberto Francavilla for Antonio Tabucchi.

The festival, remember, is promoted by the Municipality of Sal, with the Scientific Curatorship of Professor Inocência Mata and the Organization in charge of the publisher Rosa de Porcelana.

According to the organization, this fifth edition “reiterates” its objective of “helping to consolidate the island of Sal as a literary centrality in Cape Verde and inscribe it as an internationally recognized Literary Island”.

Make literature “circulate and dialogue”

The festival also intends to promote reflection and debate on the theme of World-Literature, as a “pleading” for the expansion of Literary Canons in the face of plurals and diverse international literary practices.

Through partnerships and contact networks, the organization thus wants to “circulate and dialogue” authors and their works on an extended external platform.

About 7 countries represented

In addition to Cape Verdean writers and professors, the presence of authors, researchers, editors and translators from Germany, Angola, Brazil, Italy, Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe is expected.

The usual opening conference this year focuses on the theme “World-Literature”. In addition to scientific sessions and thematic dialogues, the program also includes an exhibition and donation of books to the Municipal Library of Sal, various readings and meetings with students from primary and secondary schools on the island.

Various topics under discussion

The “Scientific Moments” will feature tables on various topics, such as Language and Identity I; Language and Identity II and Learning a Language in the Encounter with the Other.

Thematic tables, with the participation of guest writers, professors, researchers, editors and translators, outline topics such as Language/Identity – National Literature and World-Literature; Edition and Circulation and Identity and Projection of Alterities.

Extension to Santiago

The Festival will also have some extension activities this year, starting with Cape Verde, in partnership with the University of Santiago and the Municipality of Praia. thematization” of World-Literature.

The 2023 edition of the Festival will be inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, and the activities will take place in the auditorium of the Hotel Belorizonte, with a reading session in the Salinas de Pedra de Lume and visits by writers to the Educational Complex Manoel António Martins , Colégio Letrinhas and Escola Básica e Secundária Olavo Moniz.

The closing session will be chaired by the Minister of Tourism and Transport, Carlos Santos, and the winner of the Lhana Prize for Literature will be announced on the occasion.

Remember that this festival is a project created by Filinto Elísio, José Luís Peixoto, Márcia Souto and Patrícia Pinto, and had its first edition in 2017, with tributes to the Cape Verdean poet Corsino Fortes and the Portuguese writer José Saramago. That year, there was an extension of the event in Brazil, in partnership with the Forum das Letras de Ouro.
