Africa-Press – Cape verde. The young American athlete Leigh Vaynes, daughter of Cape Verdean parents, seven times US champion and third in the world ranking in the 62-kilogram wrestling discipline, is aiming to qualify for the Olympics for Cape Verde.

The wrestler, who is in the country on her first visit to get to know the land of her parents, originally from the island of Fogo, told Inforpress that she had come to the archipelago to intensify her training, spread the sport to the younger generation and get the documents for her nationality.

Once a captain in the US military, Leigh Vaynes said that he was a member of the US national team for 10 years, collecting international honours and creating her own school, but that three years ago he decided to leave the US national team with the intention of going international with Cabo Verde.

“I decided to change my nationality. It cost me dearly because I didn’t compete at the highest level for three years, as well as paying a fine of 10,000 dollars,” Vaynes, who is in the country with coach Eugene Monteiro and manager and martial arts grandmaster Josep Pina, told Inforpress.
