WYD: Cape Verdean pilgrims opted to stay in Lisbon, says deacon

Africa-Press – Cape verde. One of the deacons accompanying Cape Verdean pilgrims to World Youth Day (WYD) said yesterday that “no one is missing” and that some young people chose to stay in Lisbon instead of participating in activities in Leiria.

Deacon José Manuel Vaz, who accompanied one of the four delegations from the island of Santiago that, between July 25th and last Wednesday, arrived in Lisbon, expressed his amazement at the news that reported the disappearance of pilgrims from Cabo -Verdians and Angolans.

“It’s ‘fake news’. No one is missing and no pilgrim is obliged to participate in diocesan activities,” said the deacon, as reported by CNN, quoting the Lusa agency.

“Some pilgrims who arrived in Lisbon chose to stay in the city, where they found accommodation with family and friends, instead of going to Leiria to participate in activities. No one reported that the activities were mandatory,” he added.

Reminding that pilgrims have an 18-day visa, after which they cannot remain in Portugal, the religious stressed, on the other hand, that “nobody guarantees that, after that period, some pilgrims will not stay in Portugal”, but says that “ this is a problem that has nothing to do with participating in the journey”.

It should be recalled that another deacon, Daniel Vaz, told RCV today that the Cape Verdean delegation participating in WYD activities at the moment is made up of just over 400 pilgrims, practically half of the number of people who left Cape Verde for the effect.
