Zezinha Alfama Launches Book on Cape Verde Scouting

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Scout leader Zezinha Alfama will present, on Friday the 27th, in Praia, a book about scouting in Cape Verde, aiming to preserve its memory and contribute to the future of scouting in the country.

With 34 years of experience in scouting and 25 years since the creation of the Catholic Scouting Corps of Cape Verde (CEC-CV), the writer Zezinha Alfama decided to gather experiences, accounts, and reflections in the book “Memories with Stories of Scouting in Cape Verde,” with the objective of valuing the trajectory of the scouting movement in the country and contributing to the preservation of its history, also leaving perspectives for future generations.

According to the author, one of the main reasons for writing the book was gratitude, emphasizing “that gratitude is the soul saying thank you” and that she felt the need to put in writing “personal experiences” that, in many moments, intersect with the history of the organization to which she belongs.

The work also arises as a response to requests from colleagues and friends who questioned who would record the history of scouting in Cape Verde. “Perhaps I am a scout,” she recalled, emphasizing that she felt almost obligated to share her memories so that new generations can learn about and understand the trajectory of the movement.

Alfama stated that the book will address her first contact with scouting, while still outside of Cape Verde, her desire to implement and strengthen the movement in the country, as well as the impact of scouting on her personal and associative life.

The author also highlights her choice of Catholic scouting and acknowledges the contribution of several figures who marked this path, including Bishop Dom Paulino Évora, as well as former assistants and leaders who helped consolidate the movement.

Among the main messages of the work, the scout leader highlights three essential messages: the importance of enthusiasm, understood as joy and willingness to face challenges; the need to “swim against the tide,” combating indifference, selfishness, and mediocrity; and the spirit of overcoming, summarized in the expression “resourceful listening,” encouraging creativity and resilience in the face of difficulties.

The book project began in 2013, when the author started collecting and compiling notes kept over the years. Throughout the process, she sought to synthesize the content to make it accessible, especially to younger readers, avoiding an excessively long work.

The publication also draws attention to the gaps identified in the history of scouting in Cape Verde, despite references pointing to the movement’s presence in the country as early as 1910, a few years after its founding in 1907.

300 copies of the book were printed, intended not only for scouts but for anyone interested in the history and associative life in Cape Verde.

The launch will take place on February 27th at 6 PM in the Immaculate Conception Parish Hall, Craveiro Lopes neighborhood, in an environment that will include entertainment by scout groups.

The book will be available on the day of the presentation and can later be purchased directly from the author or through her group.

The price will be determined later, taking into account production costs and support provided to staff involved in the process.
