Africa-Press – Eritrea. AFRICAN countries and Japan have announced their commitment to deepen strategic cooperation in the economy, society, defense, and security sectors.

Tanzana is one of the African Union (AU) member states participating in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9).

The conference was officially opened today, August 20, 2025, by several top leaders including Shigeru Ishiba, Prime Minister of Japan; His Excellency João Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola and Chairperson of the African Union (AU); António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN); His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC); Mr. Haoliang Xu, Acting Administrator and Associate Administrator of the UNDP; and Mr. Makhtar Diop, Executive Director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), on behalf of the President of the World Bank.

In his opening speech, the Prime Minister of Japan announced his country’s commitment to advancing strategic cooperation with African countries in three key areas: Economy, Society, and Defense and Security.

Japan pledged to collaborate with Africa in addressing the challenges of unsustainable debt; strengthening African integration, promoting regional cooperation through the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA); and developing Africa’s private sector by enhancing partnerships with Japan’s private sector.

Furthermore, Japan will focus on human resource development by supporting youth and women through training programs, startups, and backing Africa’s efforts to provide universal quality healthcare services.
