Africa-Press – Eritrea. The progress so far achieved in the eradication of female genital mutilation in Anseba Region attests to the commitment to its full eradication across the country. The comment was made at an assessment meeting organized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare in Keren on 29 December to review the implementation of activities by the Ministry.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Leul Gebreab, Minister of Labor and Social Welfare, said that the progress achieved so far could serve as an example beyond Eritrea to other countries, and called for integrated efforts to ensure that the practice does not relapse.

According to the report presented at the meeting, in 2025 over 24 million Nakfa was distributed to families of martyrs and over 5 million Nakfa in support of war-disabled veterans.

The report further noted that inspection activities were carried out on 900 institutions and enterprises, focusing on job contracts, accident control, health and cleanliness of workers, document handling, and other related activities. Corrective measures were also taken on deficiencies identified, according to their degree.

The participants conducted extensive discussions on the report presented and adopted various recommendations, including reinforcing community rehabilitation and development; ensuring proper follow-up on those rehabilitated through livestock and small-scale trade; and conducting sustainable awareness-raising activities so that workers properly understand their rights and obligations.

Urging sustainable and integrated efforts to fully eradicate harmful practices, Col. Tesfatsion Girmay, Director General of Social Service in the region, called on all institutions to follow the noble example of students and Government workers in supporting families of martyrs.
