Africa-Press – Eritrea. African representatives have been officially placed in their respective pots ahead of the FIFA World Cup draw, following the release of the latest seeding list that groups the 48 participating nations into four pots based on the FIFA rankings.
The distribution places Morocco and Senegal at the top of the African contingent, while five-time finalists Ghana find themselves in the lowest tier after a dip in rankings.
Morocco, Senegal Lead Africa in Pot 2
Morocco and Senegal are Africa’s two highest-seeded teams for the draw, both securing places in Pot 2, a reward for their consistency and strong international performances.
The Atlas Lions, who made history by reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, remain Africa’s best-ranked side and will avoid heavyweights such as Croatia, Colombia, Japan, Switzerland, and Uruguay during the group stage draw.
Senegal, the reigning African champions, also maintain their status as one of the continent’s most stable teams, earning a comfortable slot in Pot 2.
Their placement puts them in a favourable position as they seek to progress beyond the group stage for the second time in their history.
Five African Teams Land in Pot 3
Africa’s representation continues in Pot 3, where Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, and South Africa are positioned.
Egypt and Algeria, two of Africa’s most decorated football nations, return to the global frame looking to make meaningful impacts after recent absences.
Tunisia, one of the continent’s most regular World Cup participants, once again finds itself in mid-tier seeding.
Reigning AFCON champions Ivory Coast also sit in Pot 3, despite their continental triumph, as FIFA rankings still place them just outside the second-tier bracket.
South Africa completes the African list in Pot 3, marking a crucial return to the World Cup landscape after years of rebuilding.
Cape Verde, Ghana Placed in Pot 4
Two African teams — Cape Verde and Ghana — have been drawn into Pot 4, reserved for the lowest-ranked automatic qualifiers as well as playoff winners.
Cape Verde’s rise continues to attract attention as they secure a second-straight World Cup qualification berth.
However, their global ranking keeps them in the lowest seeding group.
The biggest surprise is the placement of four-time African champions Ghana, whose recent struggles have pushed them into Pot 4.
Their position means they risk facing a “group of death,” with possible matchups against giants from Pots 1 and 2.

The World Cup draw promises intense anticipation across Africa as the continent’s teams await their group-stage opponents.
