Africa-Press – Eritrea. Confederation of African Football President Patrice Motsepe has hailed Africa’s qualification of 10 countries for the FIFA World Cup 2026 as a landmark moment in the continent’s football history.
For the first time ever, Africa will be represented by 10 nations at the global showpiece, a significant increase from previous editions and a reflection of the continent’s growing influence in world football.
Motsepe described the achievement as a testament to the steady progress and rising competitiveness of African teams on the international stage. “This is a recognition of the growth and global competitiveness of African football,” he said. “We are confident our teams will make us proud, and we believe an African nation can lift the World Cup.”
The expanded representation follows reforms to the World Cup format, which will see more teams participate in the 2026 edition. Africa stands as one of the major beneficiaries, with increased slots offering more nations the opportunity to compete at the highest level.
With stronger squads, increased exposure, and growing investment in the game, expectations are high that African teams will not only participate but contend.
As preparations begin for the countries who have qualified, attention will turn campaigns and squad development, with hopes that the historic milestone could culminate in an even greater achievement on football’s biggest stage.
