Africa-Press – Eritrea. The Ministry of Agriculture has reported encouraging progress over the past 34 years in maintaining livestock development and health.

According to a report by the Public Relations Office of the Ministry, a mandatory livestock vaccination program has been introduced to control various animal diseases. The rate of animal disease infections, which was 67% in 1993, has significantly declined.

The report further indicated that since 2013, 2.5 million livestock are being vaccinated annually against Rinderpest, Peste des Petits Ruminants, Lumpy Skin Disease, Sheep Pox, and Foot-and-Mouth Disease, which has significantly contributed to controlling and preventing animal diseases and deaths.

Noting that Eritrea is among the countries that successfully prevented the spread of the communicable animal disease Rinderpest, the report stated that in 2005 Eritrea received a Gold Medal and a certificate of acknowledgment from the World Health Organization for fully eradicating the disease.

Regarding poultry farm development, the report noted that over the past 34 years of independence, the Ministry of Agriculture has imported about 113 thousand parent hens, and approximately 7.5 million chickens have been distributed to beneficiaries. The number of bee swarms, which stood at 19 thousand in 1991, has now increased to over 46 thousand.
