Africa-Press – Eritrea. FIFA is set to usher in a new era of football regulations by testing Arsène Wenger’s revised offside rule in Canada. Starting April 4, the Canadian Premier League will become the first professional competition to implement this change, approved by FIFA and the IFAB.

The new interpretation introduces a “daylight” principle, where an attacker will only be ruled offside if their entire body is beyond the second-to-last defender, aiming to favor attacking play and increase the flow of matches.

Alongside this innovation, the Canadian league will also introduce Football Video Support (FVS), a simplified version of VAR. Unlike the traditional system, FVS can be triggered by coaches during crucial moments of the game, offering a more flexible and less intrusive use of technology. This dual experiment marks a significant step in modernizing refereeing tools and enhancing the spectacle of football.

FIFA is closely monitoring this trial phase and hopes it will provide valuable insights into the impact of these changes. “This new rule should give a slight advantage to attackers,” the governing body stated, emphasizing its desire to make the game more dynamic and entertaining. The results from Canada could pave the way for a broader implementation across global competitions in the near future.
