Africa-Press – Eritrea. Mouthwash can alter the oral microbiome and potentially damage teeth, a study from scientists at the University of Plymouth has shown.

The use of mouthwash helps to keep breath fresh and avoids the bacteria in between the corners of the teeth but it has adverse effects within a short period.

According to a publication by New Atlas the use of mouthwash for one week can alter the oral microbiome, lowering saliva pH and increasing acidity.

The research shows that chlorhexidine mouthwash notably reduced microbial diversity in the mouth after seven days.

“Mouthwash use increased the abundance of Neisseria, Streptococcus and Granulicatella bacteria while lowering the abundance of Actinomyces,” the publication said.

The research findings revealed that the usage of mouthwash causes a drop in the environmental PH levels in the mouth.

The lead of the research team Raul Bescos said that there is a lack of knowledge and literature behind the use of the products.

“Chlorhexidine mouthwash is widely used but research has been limited to its effect on a small number of bacteria linked to particular oral diseases, and most has been carried out in vitro,” Bescos said.
