Africa-Press – Eritrea. There was tension in the Super Eagles’ camp on Tuesday after players and officials reportedly boycotted training in Rabat, Morocco, over unresolved issues concerning outstanding payments.
According to reports from the team’s base at the Rive Hotel, the squad refused to take part in the evening training session scheduled ahead of Thursday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash against the Panthers of Gabon.
Sources within the camp revealed that the players are protesting unpaid bonuses and allowances that have lingered for several international windows.
Despite assurances from officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the matter remains unsettled, prompting the team to take collective action.
One source disclosed that the players insisted they would not resume training until concrete steps are taken to resolve the payment issue, describing the situation as “a matter of respect and fairness.”
This development comes at a critical time for the Super Eagles, who have been intensifying preparations in Rabat for the high-stakes fixture.
The boycott is expected to disrupt their training rhythm, with just two days left before kickoff at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex.
Head coach Eric Chelle and his technical crew were reportedly in discussions late Tuesday night with NFF representatives to resolve the standoff and get the team back to training.
Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen, who recently joined Galatasaray, and midfielder Alhassan Yusuf had only just joined the camp on Tuesday afternoon, bringing the number of players to 22 before the boycott occurred.
Fans will be hoping the payment row is swiftly resolved so that focus can return to football as Nigeria chases a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
