Thibaut Courtois Defends Club World Cup Critics

Africa-Press – Eritrea. Thibaut Courtois has fired back at critics of the Club World Cup, insisting the tournament deserves far more respect. After Real Madrid edged Juventus 1–0 to reach the quarterfinals, the Belgian goalkeeper slammed those who downplay the competition’s level.
“If you believe four Twitter users who think the level is crap, you’re wrong,” he said. “Brazilian teams are good, Al-Hilal is excellent, and Monterrey can beat Dortmund on their day.”

Courtois highlighted the tournament’s intensity and dismissed the idea that only European teams matter. With Madrid set to face Dortmund in the quarterfinals on July 5, he remained focused on the challenge ahead. “There are a lot of good matches—interesting to watch—and we must work hard to reach the final,” he added.

His response comes amid growing skepticism from figures like Jürgen Klopp and Raphinha, who have criticized the expanded format.
