Tinsa’E Sebe’A Enderta Party Advocates Sea Access

Africa-Press – Eritrea. Tinsa’e Sebe’a Enderta Party, one of the youngest ethnic Tigary opposition parties operating in the region, is reportedly asserting that “Ethiopia must get sea access.”

According to DW Amharic report published on Friday, the party has announced it “supports the Ethiopian government’s stand on the Red Sea.”

It was during a press conference with journalists regarding current affairs in the region that the party announced its stance on the Ethiopian government’s claim on the red sea.

“Using all possible ways, the Ethiopian government should recover the sea which was taken 30 years ago,” DW Amharic cited the party as saying.

Abraham Tsige, public relation head of Tinsa’e Sebe’a Enderta, is quoted as saying “Ethiopia must get sea access.” He explained his position that the sea was handed over (to Eritrea) through illegal means, and that it needs to be corrected.

Eritrea became an independent state in 1993 following a referendum. The government argues that the referendum was conducted in line with all the international norms. The Ethiopian government under the late prime minister Meles Zenawi is said to have requested the United Nations to recognize the referendum and Eritrea’s Independence.

However, new claims have recently been surfacing, mostly from a few Ethiopian Military commanders, that Assab was given out to Eritrea through illegal means. They argue that Assab was at the time an autonomous region and that the transitional government under Meles Zenawi did not have a mandate to hand it over Eritrea. According to some defense commanders, “there was no legitimate referendum in Assab.”

The position seems to be the ruling Prosperity Party, and the Eritrea government sees the claim as provocative.

Tinsa’e Sebe’a Enderta is reportedly explicitly advocating for the recovery of what it called “our fathers estate” – The Red Sea.

The opposition party also called for the Interim Administration in the region to arrange for a forum on the need for the existence of a peaceful political situation in the country.
