Wafcon Qualifiers: Plumptre Header Puts Falcons Ahead

Africa-Press – Eritrea. The Super Falcons took an early lead against the Amazons of Benin Republic in their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifying clash at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta.

After just 12 minutes of action, Nigeria broke the deadlock through defender Ashley Plumptre, who rose highest to nod home Esther Okoronkwo’s perfectly delivered corner kick. The well-timed header sent the home crowd into wild celebrations as the Falcons took control of proceedings.

Nigeria continued to dominate possession, moving the ball swiftly and forcing the Beninoise to defend deep inside their half. Asisat Oshoala and Chinwendu Ihezuo looked lively in attack, while Plumptre and Osinachi Ohale kept things tight at the back.

Benin Republic, on their part, struggled to settle into the game but tried to hit on the counter through captain Milhad Sadikou, though they found limited space against the organized Nigerian defence.

As the first half progressed, the Super Falcons looked comfortable and in control, maintaining their 1–0 advantage going into the break.
