World Down Syndrome Day was observed on March 21 in Teseney, Gash Barka Region, under the theme “Together Against Loneliness.” Officials emphasized the importance of public awareness and the protection of rights for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The event marks the 25th international and 7th national observance of this day.
Africa-Press – Eritrea. World Down Syndrome Day, 21 March, was observed at the regional level in Teseney, Gash Barka Region, under the theme “Together Against Loneliness.”
Mr. Nirayo Mehari, head of the National Association of Intellectual and Developmental Disability branch, said that strong efforts are being exerted in collaboration with partners to enhance public understanding, ensure the rights of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and improve social service provision in general and education in particular.
The head of the association in the Gash Barka Region, Mr. Tesfazgi Tesfamariam, on his part urged the public to show love to children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and create a conducive atmosphere for them so that their rights are protected.
Mr. Seium Gebreyesus, administrator of Teseney sub-zone, on his part said that proper treatment of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities is the responsibility of every citizen.
World Down Syndrome Day is being observed for the 25th time at the international level and for the 7th time at the national level.
