Africa-PressEritrea. The new man at the helm of the UN’s only peacekeeping component tasked with an offensive role is Tanzanian brigadier general Stevens Mnkande who replaces South African one-star Monwabisi Dyakopu.

The change of command parade took place at a major MONUSCO base in Beni, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Friday. With South Africa marking Heritage Day the change of command parade also featured cultural events.

VIPs present to see the Tanzanian take command included ambassadors and defence attaches from Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania and most of the command structure of both MONUSCO and its FIB, staffed by Southern African Development Community (SADC) states Malawi, South Africa and Mozambique.

Following the change of command parade the new FIB commander was shown displays of equipment and weaponry used by the brigade during Dyakopu’s time in charge. According to a SA National Defence Force (SANDF) LinkedIn correspondent, seeing weapons from the various components of the FIB was “a great move” enabling Mnkande to “see what is at his disposal” and will assist his planning.
