ZAMBIA are champions of the 2022 COSAFA Under-20 championships following their 1-0 win over defending champions Mozambique at Somhlolo National stadium yesterday.
The two nations will now represent the COSAFA region in the 2023 TotalEnergies Under-20 Championships to be held next year in Egypt
Zambia had an upper hand in the first half as they threw everything to the opposition but Mozambique remained resolute. Zambia broke the deadlock in the 36th minute through a Kingstone Mutandwa strike, which gave the Chissi Mberwe lads a slender lead going into the breather.
The two coaches introduced some fresh legs into the pitch with Mozambique looking for the elusive equaliser until the end of regulation time.
The match was watched by dignitaries including Prime Minister Cleopas Dlamini, COSAFA President Artur de Almeida e Silva, EFA President Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane, acting Minister of Sports ,Culture and Youth Affairs David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala and Inyatsi Group CEO Derrick Shiba to mention a few.
The champions further produced the player of the tournament Charles Mumba and goalkeeper of the tournament Sheba Yembolo.
