Africa-Press – Eswatini. Unknown gunmen stormed Sigodvweni Police Station on Thursday night and opened fire.
The latest incident illustrates how violence where guns are an element continues to disturb life in the kingdom, engendering unprecedented fear among citizens.
An undisclosed number of attackers are said to have entered the police station at around 10pm and started shooting indiscriminately.
The armed group escaped immediately after spraying the facility with a hail of bullets.
Witnesses narrated that the trigger -happy men were aiming their weapons at the station’s service centre, where there were some officers working.
The eyewitnesses disclosed that the attackers fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene, taking the direction towards Mbikwakhe, which is also in the Matsapha precinct.
This prompted a high speed chase after brave officers tried to pursue the attackers.
However, there was no success on the part of the police officers as the gunmen found a convenient mantle in the thickness of the darkness of the night.
No injuries resulted from the heavy gunfire, according to the police.
However, two motor vehicles which were parked outside within the premises of the police station were damaged.
This was a private vehicle belonging to one officer and a police van which were both riddled by bullets.
The bullets are said to have also grazed walls and the door leading to where officers who were on night duty were working.
The motive behind the shootings remain unclear, but the country has been hit by random attacks aimed at police service and other members of the security services, including correctional services warders and soldiers ever since it was thrown into political turmoil around June 2021.
During the overnight attack several officers who were present reportedly managed to escape injuries. This was after they took cover immediately after the shooters began to fire their weapons.
The attackers are said to have spent a considerable time spraying the building with bullets, before they escaped.
Since it all happened at night, it is still unclear whether the attackers used one vehicle or more.
The only thing that was certain was the direction in which they took. Officers tried to pursue them to no success.
Investigators who later processed the crime scene were able to retrieve some pieces of ballistic evidence that is still being looked at, as part of an ongoing investigation.
The shooting incident was confirmed by Deputy Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Inspector Nosipho Mnguni yesterday.
“There is an investigation that is underway.
“Police tried to pursue the attackers but could not get much information because it was at night. No one was injured from the incident, except for two vehicles which were damaged by the bullets,” she said.
