Africa-Press – Eswatini. Finally Eswatini will have a beauty queen this year. It has been two years since Eswatini had a beauty queen or hosted any beauty pageants except for Miss Cultural Heritage who was crowned late last year. Pageants Eswatini’s Catrine Potgieter confirmed yesterday that they would be crowning Eswatini’s beauty queen this year.

stopped

“We are most definitely crowning Miss Eswatini this year and all other beauty queens. We are yet to meet as a team and stakeholders to discuss the perfect dates of crowning the beauty queens of all Eswatini pageants,” Potgieter said.

Last year Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture (ENCAC) CEO Stanley Dlamini stopped Pageants Eswatini from crowning beauty queens. Dlamini stated that it would not make sense to crown any beauty queen as she would not compete anywhere international due to the coronavirus pandemic at that time. These beauty pageants were Mr/Miss Eswatini, Miss Little Eswatini, Miss Culture Heritage, Miss Tourism to name a few.

crowned

Miss Eswatini was last hosted in 2018 when Nosipho Dlamini was crowned the queen.

In 2020, Nondumiso Dlamini who was Miss Eswatini first princess was left to attend to Miss Eswatini duties as the now former queen, Nosipho Dlamini, left the country to study in Taichung, Taiwan at the Providence University.

Nosipho’s departure follows the second princess Sandra Mbhamali-Gama’s resignation after she got married in 2019. Gama resigned from the pageant before she got married, excusing herself from any duties. Meaning, Nondumiso was the only active beauty queen under Miss Eswatini.

Nondumiso was expected to carry out Nosipho’s duties and crown the new queen this year. Mr Eswatini was last crowned in 2018 with Rodney Lansberg along with his princes Wandile and Wandile Zishwili. Miss Eswatini has not been competing in international stages such as Miss World and Miss Universe for the past 11 years.

The last queen to participate on one of these stages was Ayanda Dube (now Ginindza) in 2012.

Eswatini pageant was held for first time in 1975 when Vinah Mamba became the first national beauty queen. The pageant was held consistently over the years until the ENCAC wrestled the licence from their director Vinah Mamba-Grey. The pageant is now directed by Pageant Eswatini.

A former beauty queen who wanted to remain anonymous said the ENCAC and Pageants Eswatini should go back to the drawing board and discuss what was required on international stages for the country to be able to participate at the Miss Universe or Miss World pageants.
