Africa-Press – Eswatini. Madlenya continued with the giant killing spree as they claimed their third straight victory in the MTN Premier League, defeating Manzini Wanderers 2-1 in an exciting game that was played here yesterday.
The Lubombo-based side, which has made the 2-1 scoreline, their trade mark opened the 2023/24 MTN Premier League campaign with a win over Mbabane Highlanders. They went on to beat Royal Leopard and yesterday bagged another three points at the expense of yet another seasoned side in the maroon and white hub giants.

The William ‘Baggio’ Gamedze-coached outfit are currently on the summit of the log standings with a game in hand against giants Mbabane Swallows. Coming back to the game, Wanderers dominated possession from the sound of the first whistle, but struggled to break through Madlenya’s defence marshalled by Gift Gamedze. The visitors gradually came to the game and nearly broke the deadlock Mpendulo Gamedze’s well-taken shot narrowly missed the target with goalkeeper Phila Mkhabela at sea.

Wanderers, who paraded new signee Thabiso Mokenkoane also had a sniff at goal, when the debutant forced goalkeeper Dumisa Dlamini to a daring save after he drove the ball into goal from a rebound inside the danger zone. The teams went to the breather with the scoreboard clean. The host continued with their dominance in the second stanza, but failed to find the back of the net. It was the visitors who eventually broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, when Mfundo Simelane connected beautifully a telling cross from Man of the Match Sethu Ngcamphalala to beat Wanderers goal-custodian between the sticks. The Lubombo outfit’s joy was short-lived four minutes later as Skipper Mlamuli ‘Mlaba’ Nkambule restored parity for his side. The lanky former Mbabane Highlanders versatile player finished at close range.

Madlenya made things harder for the ‘Weslians’ just seven minutes before regulation time, when Sehluko Nkabinde’s header hit the post and from that rebound, Lindelwa Mngometulu made no mistake, but channelled the ball into the net to give his side their ninth point in three games. The result saw Madlenya cementing the pole position at the log, while handing Wanderers their second defeat. Madlenya will face Manzini Sea Birds while Wanderers have a date with Ezulwini United in their next fixtures.
