ENFRES LEADS WATER SAFETY CAMPAIGN IN SIGWE

Africa-Press – Eswatini. In a strong commitment to protecting children ahead of the school holidays, the Eswatini National Fire Rescue and Emergency Service (ENFRES), together with key partners, conducted a comprehensive water safety awareness campaign in Sigwe Inkhundla.

The campaign was held at Dicapol and Mbava Primary Schools around Hluti, where learners received vital education on how to stay safe around water sources during the festive break and rainy season.

The initiative brought together a multi-agency team comprising the Eswatini National Fire Rescue and Emergency Service (ENFRES), the Royal Eswatini Police Service Scuba Divers Unit, World Vision Eswatini, and the Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society. The collaboration aimed to strengthen community awareness and reduce the risk of drowning incidents among children.

During the interactive sessions, officers and rescue experts emphasized that danger can exist even in the most unexpected places. Children were taught that small household water containers such as buckets, basins, and drums can pose serious risks if left uncovered or unattended.

Learners were also strongly advised never to play near water sources without adult supervision. Facilitators highlighted that rivers and streams become especially dangerous during the rainy season, with fast-moving currents that can easily sweep away even strong swimmers.

The Royal Eswatini Police Service Scuba Divers demonstrated real-life rescue operations, giving learners a practical understanding of emergency response procedures. Their presentations reinforced the importance of prevention, caution, and quick reporting of unsafe situations.

Teachers and community leaders who attended the campaign welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and highly relevant as schools close for the holidays—a period when child outdoor activity and risk exposure tend to increase.

ENFRES officials further extended their message to parents and guardians, urging them to take responsibility at household level by emptying open water containers, securing water storage areas, and ensuring constant supervision of children.

The campaign underscored the importance of shared responsibility among government institutions, humanitarian organizations, schools, and families in safeguarding young lives.

As the school term concludes, the message from Sigwe remains clear: awareness saves lives, prevention is essential, and every child deserves a safe environment free from avoidable dangers.
