Africa-Press – Eswatini. There is a push to embed the country’s major celebrations into the school curricular, with the goal of preserving and showcasing the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture Chief Executive Officer Stanley Dlamini fervently advocated for the inclusion of national festivals in the school curriculum when interviewed at the Bugani Ceremony at Buhleni Royal Residence yesterday.
Dlamini’s plea comes on the heels of the increasing international allure of Eswatini’s ceremonies, prompting him to propose their inscription as world heritage sites under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
In his pursuit to weave the nation’s cultural tapestry into the fabric of education, Dlamini disclosed that he had engaged with the national archives team to integrate Eswatini’s cultural heritage seamlessly into school curriculums.
“We have a responsibility of ensuring that future generations comprehend the significance of their cultural identity, fostering a profound connection with their roots,” he said.
The CEO emphasised the growing attraction of these festivals to international visitors, citing an example of researchers from Finland extending their stay to partake in the vibrant cultural ceremonies.
This, he said, signifies a burgeoning global interest that extends beyond the local populace, underscoring the festivals’ potential as cultural ambassadors for Eswatini.
Deputy Senate President Ndumiso Mdluli echoed Dlamini’s sentiments, underscoring the imperative to thoroughly embed national ceremonies in the educational framework.
“This would be a strategic move towards fostering a profound understanding of heritage among the youth,” he stated, calling for collective commitment to ensuring that the country’s cultural legacy remains vibrant, cherished, and integral to the nation’s identity.
Mdluli urged politicians to play a pivotal role in this endeavour, emphasising that active participation in cultural festivities demonstrates a commitment to preserving the country’s unique traditions.
Mdluli passionately advocated leveraging Eswatini’s culture and traditions to bolster the tourism sector, highlighting the substantial economic contribution of tourists and urged a concerted effort to attract even more visitors annually.
Embracing cultural tourism, according to Mdluli, not only preserves heritage but also stimulates economic growth. Further expressing excitement over the socio-economic implications of cultural festivities, Mdluli celebrated the role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in generating income during these ceremonies.
He lauded the opportunity for local businesses to thrive and contribute to economic resilience given the country’s unemployment challenges.
The ceremony, graced by Their Majesties attracted thousands of attendees, including diplomats.
