Africa-Press – Eswatini. Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has expressed eSwatini’s commitment to the international road safety agenda, describing road safety as “a matter of dignity, development, and human rights.”
As reported by Government online platforms, the Prime Minister was speaking at the Kofi Annan Road Safety Awards ceremony in Ezulwini on Tuesday evening.
“Our hosting of this event is particularly meaningful as Eswatini was a recipient of the Road Safety Management Award during the 2nd Edition held in Marrakech, Morocco. That recognition was not merely a trophy on the shelf, but a reaffirmation that road safety is a national priority for Eswatini. It was a call to deepen our efforts and scale impactful interventions that save lives. We must also acknowledge the vision of the late Kofi Annan. His leadership brought road safety into the development discourse at the United Nations, ultimately leading to the creation of the office of the UN Special Envoy for Road Safety under former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. His legacy reminds us that safety on our roads is a matter of dignity, development, and human rights.Eswatini is fully committed to this agenda. We were among the first countries to ratify the African Road Safety Charter, adopted by the African Union in 2016. This Charter provides the legal and institutional framework for harmonised road safety policies across the continent,” he said.
On another note, the PM said in addition, the National Road Safety Strategy (2021–2023) aligned with the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety aims to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030.
“These are not just targets they are moral imperatives. Behind every statistic is a family, a community, and a future cut short.Road safety is not a technical issue alone, it is a societal challenge that requires political will, intersectoral collaboration, and public engagement. Let this event serve as a renewed call to action. As we move forward, let us remember that progress is not measured by awards alone, but by lives saved, families kept whole, and futures preserved,” said the PM.
