ENPF APPLAUDED FOR E25 MILLION COVID-19 RELIEF

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Eswatini National Provident Fund (ENPF) has been widely praised for its remarkable E25 million COVID-19 relief initiative, a program designed to support workers affected by the pandemic’s challenges.

The announcement was made during the International Workers’ Day celebration, where Federation of Eswatini Trade Unions (FESWATU) President Mashumi Shongwe highlighted the ENPF’s outstanding contribution to uplifting workers.

Transformative Support for Workers

The ENPF directed E20 million straight to workers and allocated E5 million to establish the relief fund. Shongwe noted that this financial boost will go a long way in improving workers’ conditions of service, offering them much-needed stability during uncertain times.

A Call to Strengthen Healthcare

Shongwe also took the opportunity to urge Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini to address critical healthcare concerns, particularly the shortage of medications in hospitals. His heartfelt message, “Life lost is life never recovered,” underscored the shared national goal of ensuring quality healthcare for all citizens.

Government Commended for Wellness Focus

The government earned praise for launching the Eswatini National WELLNESS Policy on April 28, 2025. Shongwe commended the administration’s dedication to worker health and safety, emphasizing that the ongoing review of occupational safety laws reflects genuine commitment. He extended appreciation to Vice President Sabelo Dlamini for his active role.

A Vision for Inclusive Progress

Looking ahead, FESWATU envisions a future free from unemployment and poverty. Shongwe called on all social partners to work together in promoting peaceful development and economic growth, emphasizing that collaboration enhances collective bargaining power and strengthens the workforce without confrontation.

Building Strong Worker-Employer Relations

Highlighting the importance of harmony between workers and employers, Shongwe stressed that mutual trust and confidence are key to resolving disputes. He emphasized that true partnership is built on representing workers’ needs without political interference, fostering an environment of respect and shared purpose.

Celebrating a Legacy of Achievement

Reflecting on FESWATU’s history, Shongwe recalled its formation in response to the challenges around Eswatini’s AGOA status, particularly its impact on the textile and garment sectors. Through peaceful dialogue with government and employers, FESWATU played a pivotal role in regaining the country’s AGOA status at the Geneva ILO conference in 2016—an achievement that safeguarded thousands of jobs.

Conclusion: A Collective Commitment to Progress

The ENPF’s relief efforts, alongside FESWATU’s advocacy, shine as examples of Eswatini’s collective determination to uplift workers and secure their well-being. By working hand in hand, government, employers, and unions are paving the way for a brighter, healthier, and more prosperous future for all.
