GOVT RESPONDS TO LOCALS WITH NSUKA–NKILIJI FOOTBRIDGE PROJECT

Africa-Press – Eswatini. A new footbridge connecting Nsuka and Nkiliji is currently under construction, an initiative led by Honourable Minister Mabulala Maseko.

The project is being carried out by Microprojects in partnership with Engineers in Action, and it promises to change the lives of residents from three constituencies: Maphalaleni (Nsingweni area), Mkhiweni (Nsuka area), and Ekukhanyeni (Nkiliji area).

The Black Mbuluzi is a very big river, well known for having crocodiles. It has long posed a serious challenge to people from various areas, especially during the rainy season ,when the river swells and becomes impassable. For years, community members have braved the treacherous waters to access schools, healthcare, and services on the other side. During rainy seasons, crossing the swellen river was difficult, often forcing many to take longer and expensive routes through Luve to get to Manzini.

Residents like Samkeliso Nsusha from Nsuka are overjoyed at the development. “Now going to town will be much easier and cheaper. It is goodbye to the struggle of getting into cold water during winter just because you want to go to town,” he said.

The footbridge is not only easing travel and access to services but is also expected to improve education outcomes. Currently, some students who attend school in Nkiliji are forced to stay home when the river is full. In some cases, learners are restricted to certain schools simply due to the river barrier.

Honourable Minister Mabulala Maseko praised the initiative, stating, “The building of the footbridge will bring together the constituencies and will promote cohesion and working together when improving the living conditions of the people. Lastly, I would like to thank the Government of Eswatini for bringing development to communities. This project aligns well with Nkwe, a national development initiative introduced by His Majesty the King.”

The spirit of unity is evident in this project, with the constituencies working hand-in-hand with traditional chiefdoms. Local community members are actively involved, contributing their manpower to support the construction effort ,demonstrating a strong sense of ownership and pride. This footbridge is more than just a structure but a symbol of progress, resilience, and collective strength..
