Africa-Press – Eswatini. Swimmer Luca Fraser is the only LiSwati nominee for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Regional Annual Sports Awards (RASA) to be held on Saturday May 24, 2025, in Zimbabwe.
The Swim Lab Swimmer was nominated under the Junior Male Sportsperson of the year category and he won under the same category during the National Sports Awards held at Esibayeni Lodge by the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC).
The nominees for the 12 categories to be awarded on the night were announced by the AUSC Region V Executive. Three nominees were announced for each category.
The awards to be attended by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is also SADC Chairperson, will be held at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).
Fraser is one of the shining sports stars in the country having raked in E65 000 from the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs as an incentives for representing the country well at regional, continent and world stage.
Last year, swimmer Hayley Hoy raised the country’s flag high as she was crowned the RASA Junior female sportsperson of the year while in 2023, taekwondo artists Sihlelelwe Matsebula was the best in the region under the Junior Male Sportsperson of the year.
The RASA, launched in 2016, recognise and honour top-performing athletes, coaches, administrators, volunteers, and journalists from 10 Region 5 member countries:
The members are Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The seventh edition of the awards will honour excellence in categories including Sportsperson of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year with a Disability, and Sports Journalist of the Year, among others, under the theme, “Celebrating Excellence, Inspiring Innovation!”.
