Africa-Press – Eswatini. A touching story of selfless dedication has made Linah Mhlongo from Piggs Peak the first winner of a year’s supply of Maureen Sanitary Towels in a joint campaign by Eswatini Positive News (EPN) and Maureen Pads. The initiative aims to combat period poverty and empower women with dignity and support.
Linah’s winning entry highlighted her role as the caregiver for her late sister’s five daughters, all of whom experience their monthly periods. This responsibility underscored the significant need for menstrual hygiene products within her household, deeply resonating with the judges.
“Receiving this gift means a lot to me,” Linah expressed with gratitude. “It lifts a burden from my shoulders and reminds me that there are people and organisations who care.”
The “Changing Lives” campaign by EPN and Maureen Pads is providing four deserving women with a year’s supply of sanitary towels. This effort goes beyond a simple giveaway, aiming to stand in solidarity with Eswatini women facing financial barriers to accessing essential menstrual health products.
Zama Nokubonga Mbatha, Director of Maureen Pads, reaffirmed the company’s commitment: “Our mission is to ensure no woman has to compromise her comfort or dignity due to lack of access to sanitary products. Partnering with EPN allows us to directly support women in our community.”
Tlalane Dlamini, Marketing Representative at EPN, emphasised the campaign’s significance: “We believe in the power of positive storytelling and community empowerment. Linah’s story beautifully illustrates the real impact this initiative can have.”
The campaign encourages participation through liking and following the Facebook pages of EPN and Maureen Pads, and commenting on the competition post explaining why one deserves to win. Weekly winners will be announced until all four prizes are awarded.
This initiative underscores that access to menstrual products is a fundamental right, addressing the challenges faced by many in Eswatini who struggle with affordability, impacting their health, education, and self-esteem. By providing a year’s supply of quality sanitary towels, the partnership aims to offer not just practical support but also a boost in confidence and dignity.
This collaboration between a local business and a media platform serves as a powerful example of community-driven change, creating sustainable support for women and girls. Linah’s inspiring story marks the beginning of a series that promises to highlight the critical importance of menstrual health accessibility in Eswatini.
