Africa-Press – Eswatini. More than 100 registered teachers across Eswatini have embarked on a week-long training workshop on generative artificial intelligence (AI), aimed at enhancing their teaching methods and digital literacy.
The workshop is being held at the University of Eswatini (UNESWA), Kwaluseni Campus, and is sponsored by MTN Eswatini, the Ministry of Education, the UNESWA AI Academy, and Nando’s.
This initiative forms part of MTN Eswatini’s 21 Days of Y’ello Care campaign, which this year is themed “Connecting at the Roots, where they are launching initiativesto help bridge the digitaldivideand access gaps where it matters most”.
The training officially launched today on June 9 with an in-person session and will continue online in the evenings at 7:00 PM from June 10–12. It will conclude with a final physical session on Friday, June 13.
The workshoped was opened by Wiseman Nyembe, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at UNESWA who stated that the goal is to equip teachers with an understanding of generative AI, classroom tools, and practical exercises such as lesson planning and digital note creation.
“This will help improve teachers’ productivity as they educate digital-native students. AI is a powerful tool, but it must be used responsibly,” he said.
Thandwayinkosi Dlamini, Manager of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at MTN Eswatini, said the project aims to bridge the digital divide, especially in rural schools that are often left behind.“We want to bring AI knowledge to the grassroots and empower teachers across all communities,” she said.
Sandile Magagula, from MTN Eswatini under Information Security Department, educated participants on AI safety. He urged the use of strong passwords, additional security features, and verified platforms such as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.“Work closely with your school’s ICT team to ensure safe and responsible use of AI,” he advised.
Bheki Lulane, a teacher from St. Michael’s High School, praised the initiative. “These sessions are valuable, and I look forward to sharing this knowledge with colleagues who didn’t get the chance to attend,” he said.
