Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini is on the brink of achieving near-universal electricity access, thanks to sustained collaboration between the government and the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC). During a media breakfast meeting, Managing Director Ernest Mkhonta reported that official access stands at 88%, with unofficial estimates close to 90%.

This progress is driven by the Network Reinforcement and Access Project (NRAP), funded through World Bank loans secured by the government. Since its inception three years ago, NRAP has connected over 6,000 households nationwide, many in remote and underserved areas.

In addition, the Rural Access Fund, supported by levies on electricity purchases, continues to finance community-level connections. These initiatives are not just about lighting homes — they are about transforming livelihoods. Access to electricity enables better healthcare, improved education through digital learning, and expanded economic opportunities.

Mkhonta highlighted that rural electrification aligns with EEC’s mandate to impact society positively. “When we connect a home, we connect dreams — from small businesses running fridges and sewing machines to students studying under proper lighting,” he said.

The benefits also ripple into the broader economy. Electrified communities attract small industries, reduce rural-urban migration, and foster inclusive growth. The synergy between NRAP and EEC’s infrastructure upgrades ensures that new connections are supported by reliable supply.

Mkhonta acknowledged that achieving 100% access will require sustained investment and careful planning, especially in geographically challenging areas. However, he expressed confidence that with ongoing government support and strategic partnerships, Eswatini will soon join the ranks of nations with full electricity coverage.

The rural electrification push is a tangible example of how public-private collaboration can deliver life-changing results. For many Eswatini families, the flick of a switch now represents more than light — it represents opportunity, security, and dignity.
