Africa-Press – Eswatini. In the heart of Ezulwini, at the Eswatini Revenue Service Headquarters, a new chapter in Eswatini’s trade journey unfolded today. The atmosphere carried a sense of purpose as government officials and customs experts gathered for the official opening of the World Customs Organisation Rules of Origin Training.
Presiding over the ceremony, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Melusi Masuku, reminded participants that this was more than a workshop, it was an investment in the nation’s economic backbone.
Unlocking Opportunities Through Rules of Origin
Masuku emphasized that Rules of Origin form the cornerstone of global trade agreements, ensuring that products truly represent the countries they come from. He explained that for Eswatini, this knowledge is vital to securing preferential market access under key trade agreements, especially within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“Without skilled officers who understand and apply Rules of Origin effectively, we risk undermining our ability to participate competitively in regional and international markets,” he stated.
Trade as Eswatini’s Backbone
Highlighting the central role of trade in Eswatini’s economy, Masuku underlined how proper application of these rules supports domestic production, protects jobs, and fuels growth. Importantly, he noted that Rules of Origin should serve as bridges, not barriers, ensuring that legitimate trade thrives while shielding the economy from unfair practices.
“Trade remains the backbone of Eswatini’s economy,” Masuku affirmed. “Proper application of Rules of Origin ensures that our exports qualify for preferential treatment in key markets, supports domestic production, and contributes to job creation.”
Building Capacity for a Stronger Future
The PS commended the facilitators and encouraged participants to seize the moment, reminding them that their roles are at the frontline of Eswatini’s integration into regional and global value chains.
“This workshop aligns with Eswatini’s AfCFTA Implementation Strategy, which prioritizes capacity building for officials,” he said. “I urge every participant to translate this knowledge into practical improvements within their respective workspaces.”
A Nation Moving Forward
The opening of this training marks yet another step in Eswatini’s ongoing commitment to equipping its institutions with the skills needed to thrive in a competitive global economy. By strengthening trade facilitation capacity, Eswatini not only secures its place in international markets but also builds a brighter, more prosperous future for its people.
