NEW BILL MOVES ESWATINI CLOSER TO GLOBAL HUMAN RIGHTS GOAL

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini’s Human Rights Commission (CHRPA) has taken a significant step toward achieving international recognition by working to align its new Human Rights Bill with the global Paris Principles. The Commission, in partnership with the UNDP, organised a high level strategic workshop on October 1st, 2025, in Mbabane to review the draft legislation, build institutional capacity, and ensure the Bill guarantees robust protection for all citizens, including marginalized groups.

The strategic workshop, held at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel, brought together Commissioners, Secretariat staff, and development partners to engage with critical human rights issues. The primary focus was on reviewing the Human Rights and Public Administration Bill, with the explicit goal of strengthening it to ensure full compliance with the Paris Principles. This accreditation is a vital step that will significantly boost CHRPA’s effectiveness and international standing.

UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Ms. Nessie Golakai-Gould, highlighted the practical importance of the work during her remarks. “Human rights are not abstract ideals,” she stated, “They are lived realities that shape the daily experiences of citizens… and they are central to the Sustainable Development Goals, which call on us to leave no one behind.”

A key element of the session was the facilitation of direct dialogue with Young Key Populations on matters of diversity and inclusion. This proactive approach underscores the Commission’s commitment to addressing the sensitivity of these issues with an open mind and fostering meaningful participation.

Commissioner Zwelethu Mnisi acknowledged the commitment to reform and institutional learning, emphasizing that the legislative work is crucial. “The Human Rights Bill is very important to our work, and we need to address any loopholes accordingly,” he said, signaling the Commission’s dedication to a robust, internationally compliant legal framework.

By focusing on institutional capacity building, legal reform, and genuine dialogue, the workshop successfully propelled Eswatini’s journey towards a more just and inclusive society. The progress on the Bill marks a bold step forward in strengthening the legal and institutional framework for human rights protection, demonstrating a strong national commitment to global justice standards.
