Africa-Press – Eswatini. Mphatheni Primary School in Hlatikhulu, is experiencing significant improvements in food security and student nutrition, driven by the initiative of its own learners. Through the Taiwan Africa Vegetable Initiative Eswatini project, students are actively engaged in learning and practicing climate smart farming techniques and implementing sustainable food systems.
Learners, visibly excited about their efforts, shared the motto: “We eat, what we produce.” The educational component successfully promotes nutrition, health, and livelihoods, with students demonstrating eagerness to participate in the school’s food production. Their motivation is fueled by the satisfaction of seeing their own harvest transition directly to the school food plates, fostering an immediate connection between effort and nutritional reward.
Generational Impact and Project Scope
The impact of the training extends directly into the wider community. Students are now acting as agents of change by motivating their parents to start home gardens and actively participating in their cultivation. This transfer of knowledge and enthusiasm ensures that both school facilities and community homes are increasing their access to fresh, nutritious food, demonstrating a successful model for enhancing local food systems.
The Taiwan Africa Vegetable Initiative is a key development program designed to boost vegetable production and consumption across Africa. The initiative, supported by the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ROC (Taiwan), aims to leverage advanced agricultural knowledge to enhance food security and rural livelihoods across the continent.
This project in Eswatini is implemented in partnership with the World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg), a global non-profit organization dedicated to realizing the potential of vegetables for improved nutrition and poverty alleviation. The involvement of the Taiwan Medical Mission in Eswatini further links the project’s success in nutrition directly to improved community health outcomes.
The success at Mphatheni Primary highlights the power of targeted, practical education in partnership with international development organizations and the Ministry of Education and Training Eswatini, ensuring self reliance and long term resilience in local food production.
