Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini is facing escalating prices of water and electricity, Members of Parliament(MPs) have warned that the situation is worsening in a country where about 70% of the population lives below the poverty line.
“Water is expensive in this country and emaSwati are no longer affording this natural resource,” said Michael Masilela, a pro-Tinkhundla system MP from the Lobamba Constituency.
The Lobamba MP’s sentiments was supported by another MP Sicelo ‘KhungaNkhosi’ Dlamini from Mayiwane in the northern parts of eSwatini, a supporter of the Monarchy, Dlamini accused the Eswatini Water Services Corporation(EWSC) of collecting money from the pockets of the citizens by providing expensive water.
Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina was ousted for failing to provide affordable water, electricity and with eSwatini facing similar challenges, political experts say, the future of the Monarchy remain uncertain.
Wandile Dludlu,the Deputy President of the People’s United Democratic Movement(PUDEMO) said, the socio-economic crisis facing the people of Madagascar, is escalating in eSwatini.
“Even here in eSwatini, citizens are complaining amid escalating costs of living including the high costs of water and electricity. In a country where the people are oppressed and frustrated, the future of the Monarchy is uncertain,” said the PUDEMO Deputy President.
Eswatini is an absolute Monarchy, political parties are banned from participating in elections, the country is currently facing a health crisis and other socio-economic challenges.
