Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini highlighted its innovative approaches to disaster risk reduction at COP30, with Victor Lusekwane Mahlalela, CEO of the National Disaster Management Agency, sharing the country’s strategies and lessons with international peers on 11 November 2025.

“Eswatini has invested significantly in building evidence-based strategies that transform planning into action,” Mahlalela told the panel. “Our efforts are guided by data, technology, and collaboration across sectors to ensure our communities are prepared and resilient in the face of disasters.”

He emphasised Eswatini’s use of comprehensive country risk profiles, the CDI‐E tool, and a risk-informed decision support platform to strengthen resilience. Local governments are supported in developing disaster risk management plans, while the national government has implemented a National DRM Strategy and a Disaster Risk Financing Strategy.

“By bridging the gap between planning and action, we are ensuring that every level of government is equipped to respond effectively to hazards,” Mahlalela added. He also noted that lessons from the Caribbean and Pacific regions, along with accreditation from institutions such as the EEA, are shaping Eswatini’s disaster management approach.

The panel, which included eight global experts, featured three representatives from Eswatini: Victor MahlalelaCEO of the National Disaster Management Agency, Isaac Gcina Dladla, Chief Executive Officer of the Eswatini Environmental Authority, and Dr Deepa Pullanikkatil, Commonwealth National Climate Finance Adviser to Eswatini.

Through his remarks and the NDMA’s initiatives, Mahlalela positioned Eswatini as a regional example of innovation, preparedness, and risk-aware development. “Our vision is clear it resilient households, resilient communities, and a resilient nation,” he said. “Through coordinated strategies and evidence-driven decision-making, we are safeguarding the future of our people.”

COP30 brings together world leaders, scientists, civil society, and development partners to discuss climate change, sustainable development, financing, and pathways to resilience. Eswatini’s participation underlines its commitment to protecting communities and advancing risk-informed development.
