Africa-Press – Eswatini. In a time when many young graduates grapple with limited job opportunities, 2024 Limkokwing University graduate Skhulile Magongo is charting her own path, transforming a simple passion into a promising business.

With an associate degree in Hotel Management, Magongo has emerged as one of Eswatini’s inspiring young ‘hair-preneurs,’ proving that creativity and determination can create opportunities even in difficult economic conditions.

Magongo’s hairstyling journey began during her university years, driven by her love for creativity and a desire to help others feel confident. “I’ve always had a passion for creativity and helping people feel confident about themselves,” she explains. As a student, she noticed a demand for affordable and stylish hair services among her peers. That gap became her entry point. “The positive feedback from my first clients and the joy I felt seeing their satisfaction motivated me to keep improving my skills,” she says.

Balancing coursework with a budding business was far from easy. Magongo developed a disciplined routine—prioritizing her studies while allocating specific hours for client appointments. “Sometimes it meant working late or sacrificing leisure activities, but staying organized and setting clear boundaries helped me manage both responsibilities effectively.”

Like many young entrepreneurs, she confronted several challenges along the way. Limited resources, financial constraints, and doubt from those around her tested her commitment. But she persevered by starting small, reinvesting her earnings, and seeking advice from experienced stylists. She credits her support system and clear vision for helping her stay focused during tougher times.

Graduation came with a unique sense of pride. While many graduates anxiously face the job market, Magongo felt empowered knowing she had already built something sustainable. “It was empowering to know I wasn’t solely dependent on finding a job after school; I had built something of my own,” she says.

Her turning point came when clients outside her social circle began booking appointments. “When strangers trusted me with their hair and paid for my services, I realized my skills had real market value,” she recalls. That moment marked the beginning of her long-term vision—seeing hairstyling as more than a side hustle.

Even though her academic qualification is in Hotel Management, it still influences her approach to business. Skills such as communication, professionalism, problem-solving, and time management have shaped the way she serves clients and positions her brand. “Education broadened my perspective and helped me approach my business professionally,” she says.

For Magongo, the most rewarding part of her journey has been witnessing her own growth—both as a creative and as an entrepreneur. “Seeing the impact I have on people’s confidence and happiness makes all the hard work worthwhile,” she shares with pride.

To young people who feel hopeless in a competitive job market, her message is one of resilience and creativity: “Don’t lose hope. Your skills, passions, and ideas can open doors even when traditional paths seem closed. Start small, learn continuously, and don’t be afraid to create your own opportunities.”

As she looks to the future, Magongo plans to expand her hairstyling business, introduce new services, and build a strong, reputable brand. She also hopes to mentor and eventually employ other young people interested in the beauty industry—using her journey to inspire and uplift others.
