Mankayane Government Hospital Reopens after Fire Disruption

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Ministry of Health has announced that Mankayane Government Hospital will resume full operations on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, following the successful restoration of electricity and safety clearance after a fire incident that affected part of the facility on Sunday night.

The fire, which damaged the Male Surgical Ward and part of the Female Ward, forced an immediate shutdown of the hospital. All admitted patients were safely evacuated and temporarily transferred to nearby health facilities.

The swift response by health workers, the Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) team, and community members helped prevent injuries and ensured the safe relocation of patients.

An initial assessment by the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) on Monday advised that the hospital should not use electricity until precautionary measures were taken to prevent further damage.

A contractor was quickly engaged to carry out the required work.

The hospital will resume normal operations according the statement issued by the Ministry.

A follow-up assessment by EEC on Tuesday morning confirmed that the hospital was safe for power reconnection. Electricity supply was restored the same day, allowing the Ministry to declare the facility fit to resume operations.

Patients who had been transferred to other facilities will now be brought back to Mankayane Government Hospital. Two previously used isolation wards will be repurposed to accommodate services for the affected areas.

These wards have been inspected by EEC officials and the Eswatini Fire and Emergency Services, who certified them safe for use.

In a statement, the Ministry expressed appreciation to all stakeholders who assisted during the emergency, including partnering health facilities, the EPR team, health workers, and members of the public who risked their safety to help evacuate patients during the fire.

The Ministry further assured hospital staff and the public that the facility is safe, stable, and fully ready to resume operations.
