Africa-Press – Eswatini. From the quiet neighborhood of Ngwane Park, a powerful new literary voice is emerging. Moore Ngwenya, a young author and poet from the Manzini South Inkhundla, is preparing to launch his debut book next year titled ‘Sea waters’, aiming to use his verses to encourage faith, foster inspiration, and champion the power of the written word.
Ngwenya, whose personal slogan is “#Rhyming Nonstop”, believes poetry is fundamental to daily life. “Poetry is a part of us, a daily living,” he says. “Whether rapping a song, at work, at home, at least you should rhyme a line.”
Ngwenya’s journey began unexpectedly in late September 2019, just before the COVID-19 era. He was inspired by his church acquaintance, Steve Canby, who shared a poem written in his early twenties to celebrate his 40th wedding anniversary. Ngwenya explains, “I then got inspired to write poems of my own.”
He initially focused on deeply spiritual pieces, crafting Christian poems directly from Bible verses, aiming to encourage young Christians to engage with Scripture. This foundation quickly broadened into inspirational poems and a diverse range of forms, including tercet, cinquain, haiku, free style, and nature poems, as well as pieces dedicated to global events like Nurses Day.
He shares two of his favourite Christian works, which showcase his style:
“Creation”
-The beginning began where there was no beginning.
-Darkness doomed the days of still waters
-While the virtue of the earth remained a void.
-Harboring space for creation.
-The Universe became a living being brought to life.
-Surrounded by a thousand galaxies glittering glamour.
-Planets planting poles of protection.
-The sun devouring darkness, bringing day and night.
-Separating soft water into sky
and salt water into see.
-How I love creation.
(Crafted from Bible Book of Genesis 1 & 2)
“Anointing”
-A higher power residing in an individual.
-A title bestowed by favor
to humanity.
-A gate from ordinary to
extraordinary existence
Anointing.
Ngwenya’s writing process took approximately four years, running from September 2019 to 2024. He pursued his passion part-time while focusing on his studies at Ngwane Park High School. His creative journey was fuelled by community and critique.
He actively engaged with writers’ groups on Facebook, where he shared “mini-pieces of incomplete poems” that came to him while commuting or even in class. His craft was sharpened through participation in online email magazines, blog newsletters, and free entry writing contests.
A crucial mentor in his development was Mrs. Hlophe, an established local poet whose work is included in the Siswati curriculum. She generously edited his manuscripts and provided valuable comments. This dedication has earned him international recognition. His work has been featured in several online magazines, including:
The Discourse Literary Journal (May Issue, Spring 2024), where his poem “Freshwaves Of Spring” was published.
The Shine Poetry Anthology (2025).
The Lemon Review Anthology (Issue 2025).
Despite his success, Ngwenya is acutely aware of the systemic barriers facing local authors. He notes that the lack of institutional support is a major hurdle, pointing out the absence of writer’s grants for emerging authors, which are common in other countries. Furthermore, he highlights the difficulty in getting creative works accepted by local publishing companies, which tend to focus almost exclusively on educational materials.
This is compounded by a limited number of local poetry contests, author awards, and magazines willing to feature Eswatini writers. Finally, the financial costs associated with publishing and printing books remain prohibitively high for many aspiring authors.
He remains undeterred, urging fellow creatives: “Wherever you are, no matter the obstacles faced, don’t let the writing spirit die till you shine.” His personal philosophy is simple yet powerful: “A pen unleashes the writing beast in me. Connecting me with the people around the globe.”
Ngwenya’s book, published by Eye MVP Publishers in South Africa, Bloemfontein, is scheduled to be available in stores next year following minor delays.
