Africa-Press – Eswatini. The moment has arrived for Eswatini’s parents, learners, and educators! The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has just announced a significant and exciting change in how Grade 7 exam results will be shared, a true landmark in the country’s move towards a Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.
Goodbye Class Ranks, Hello Skills Mastery!
The days of traditional class-based results, that often felt more like a cutthroat competition, are over.
The new system ditches the pressure-cooker ranking in favor of a clear, skills-based approach. Instead of a single grade, your child’s performance will now be described using easy-to-understand competency levels:
Excellent
Very Good
Good
Fair
Sufficient
Insufficient
This is a profound shift: it puts a stronger emphasis on whether a child has truly mastered, understood, and can apply their knowledge, rather than just where they sit on a class list.
A Clearer Picture for Every Family
MOET believes this new framework provides a more meaningful picture of each child’s journey.
“The goal is simple,” says the Ministry.
“We want teachers, parents, and learners to genuinely understand the learning outcomes and spot any gaps early on”.
It’s a learner-focused approach designed to support holistic development and encourage steady, confident improvement instead of just chasing a performance metric.
When “Insufficient” Means “Time to Build Stronger Foundations”
For learners who receive an “Insufficient” rating in the external examinations, the Ministry has clarified the next step: they will be required to repeat the grade.
Crucially, MOET stresses that this is absolutely not a punishment. It is a supportive, foundational intervention aimed at giving that child the extra time and focused help they need to strengthen their skills for the next level.
To make this successful, schools have been directed to implement special remediation and enrichment programs. These are structured programs tailored specifically to address the identified learning gaps, ensuring the child gets exactly the support they need.
Supporting Our Educators
Teachers are the heart of this change, and the Ministry is committed to supporting them, too. Educators will receive enhanced professional help, including:
Mentorship and Monitoring
Targeted Training through the In-Service Education and Training Unit
Guidance from subject panels and regional inspectors
Preparing Eswatini for Tomorrow
This transformation aligns with Eswatini’s national Curriculum Framework and its commitment to quality education for everyone.
By moving the spotlight from mere classification to genuine competency, the MOET is confident that the education system will better prepare learners for whatever comes next, be it academic pursuits, technical skills, or vocational pathways. The ultimate vision is for every child to progress with confidence, capability, and purpose.
