Africa-Press – Eswatini. KaBoyce High School is taking proactive steps to ensure every learner reaches their full potential by sticking to 45 students per class under the newly introduced Competency-Based Education (CBE) program.
According to Deputy Principal Nathi Nkambule, the approach is designed to allow teachers to closely monitor each learner, identify their strengths, and provide personalised support.
CBE, which is being implemented across schools in Eswatini, focuses on assessing learners not just by overall grades but by their performance in specific strands within each subject. For example, Mathematics is divided into five strands: Number; Measurement; Shape and Space; Data Handling; and Problem Solving. The smaller class sizes will enable teachers to collect detailed data on how candidates perform in each of these strands, helping to identify areas of strength and areas requiring extra attention.
“Not exceeding 45 students per class is not because we do not want learners to have access to education, but because this CBE program is new and we want to give each student the attention they deserve so that we can accurately assess their abilities,” Deputy Principal Nkambule explained.
He added that the data collected will allow the school to better track student progress, tailor teaching strategies, and ensure that no learner is left behind. By adopting this approach, KaBoyce High School aims to build a learning environment where every child has the opportunity to excel, and teachers are equipped to provide personalised guidance.
The school’s commitment reflects a broader trend in Eswatini’s education system to enhance quality learning and foster holistic development. Parents and education stakeholders have praised the initiative, noting that smaller classes and targeted assessment strategies will lead to improved learner outcomes and a stronger foundation for academic success.
As KaBoyce High School implements CBE, it sets an example of how thoughtful planning and student-focused strategies can create a more effective, supportive, and results-driven learning environment.
